Marathia Caves is a spectacular dive site that feels like stepping into a natural cathedral of light and color. Accessible only to certified divers, this series of six shallow caves combines adventure with breathtaking geological beauty.
The dive begins beside a giant natural arch rising dramatically out of the sea — so large that boats often pass directly through it. From here, divers descend to around 12 meters, though the caves themselves rest much shallower, no deeper than 6 meters. The site is perfect for a relaxed yet adventurous exploration, where every cavern reveals something different.
Formed from calcite and sulfur, the caves shimmer with unusual textures and colors. In the very first cavern, divers experience one of the most remarkable sights of the dive: as you ascend, the water’s surface turns milky white from the sulfur, so you raise your hands high above your head and watch them disappear into a ghostly cloud.
Each of the six caves offers its own character. While none open directly to the sky, divers can ascend into hidden air pockets within the caverns to break the surface and breathe fresh air. The second cave is the only one without such a space, though it is still visited and admired for its intricate formations. Everywhere you look, the walls curve and ripple into delicate shapes, with streaks of color that range from soft whites to golden hues.
Exploring Marathia Caves is less about marine life and more about the raw artistry of nature — a dive through stone, light, and water that leaves a lasting impression long after surfacing.
